Avon County Training Day

Added 07/11/2009 by Lucy Corfield

16 recreational and novice rowers from the club were invited to join Penny Senior and some of the Avon County rowers in Saltford for an early morning training session.

We arrived at 8am to a beautifully misty Avon and admired the glass like water and their boathouse, which makes ours look, well, like a tin shed.

The crews were arranged into two 8s made up of Bristol city Rowers and a 4 from Avon County. We took to the water (along with what seemed like hundreds of other rowers) and paddled. Unfortunately Stuart's "rain dance" only lasted an hour or so and by the time we had been videoed and were off the water we were pretty much soaked through.

Thankfully tea and cake was speedily prepared and devoured. We were then split into three groups, Penny went through the video with the first, talking to each rower about their stroke and how they could improve. Another group of the rowers attempted to stay sat upright on the RowPerfect (most of us failed at this) while the third group were taken through a GB Rowing erg session. The groups were then rotated so that everyone went through each exercise.

We finished at 2pm but a keen 4 along with a very kind Penny took to the water again in the afternoon for a second paddle out on the Avon.

The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and helpful. I’m sure that everyone who attended would like to extend their thanks to Avon County rowing club, Penny in particular, for putting on such a well organised day, and kindly sharing their expertise. We can only hope that we can return the favour, so I think that Stuart better keep practicing that rain dance and we’d better buy a kettle...
